Avoid Jet Lag: Helpful Traveling Tips

If you’ve ever traveled overseas, you know the kind of toll jet lag can take on your body. It may not affect you heavily at first, but the more you travel, the longer it takes for your body to adjust. While it not sound like a big deal, jet lag affects you in many ways like feeling hungry at inappropriate times, insomnia t night while falling asleep during the day, poor concentration, and down right irritability. Luckily, Apnix Sleep Diagnostics is here with tips to help you avoid jet lag!Avoid jet lag insomnia

9 Tips to Avoid Jet Lag

  1. Shift your internal clock – You can train your body, over the course of there or four days before your flight. Slowly start to shift the time you eat and sleep to be closer to your detination’s timezone.
  2. Limit caffine – This is always a given when dealing with sleep disorders. Avoid any caffine for 12 hours before your flight, and during your flight as well.
  3. Limit alchoholic drinks – When you’re in the plane, the air with unfortuneatly dehydrate you. Don’t encourage it further by drinking alcohol. The high altitude will also quicken the effects of alchol, so one drink will seem like two.
  4. Drink water and stay hydrated – As we have already mentioned, air in the cabin will be very dry, and can quickly dehydrate you. Eyedrops are helpful as well, especially if you wear contacts.
  5. Look for overnight flights – If you fly during the night, depending on far you’re traveing, you’ll be more likely to land during the morning, or after noon.Avoid jet lag daytime sleepiness
  6. Sleep during the flight – This is super important if you’re flying at night. Go ahead and rest while you can to try and get your body ready for it’s new schedule. The better rested you are before you rrive will help your body adjusted to the stress of jet lag.
  7. Avoid over using sleeping pills – Sleeping pills may seem like a perfect fix at the time, but most forms of sleep aid can cause people to become dependant on them. A sleeping pill with a short cycle, however, might be useful during your flight to allow for rest.
  8. Get fresh air – After you’ve landed, make sure you get out and walk around. This will encourage blood flowafter a long flight, and can help keep yourself awake if you’re feeling groggy. Spending time in the sun can also help reset your internal clock.
  9. Avoid oversleeping – After a long, stressful flight most people simply want to sleep once they get to their hotel. Unless you take regular naps during the day, this can throw off your sleep schedule. Try to stay awake until a reasonable time in your current time zone to go to bed.

Over all, it can be fairly easy to avoid jet lag when you travel. However, if you find yourself suffering from jet lag symptoms weeks after the fact, contact us here at Apnix Sleep Diagnostics and we can help you get to the bottom of your sleep disorder.
